Our Afternoon in Lukang

#1 The locksmith.........and our scooter.

The weekend of December 3rd we headed to Lukang on Saturday to do our last-minute Christmas shopping - as we needed to get our parcels in the post. So, we got ourselves suited up for a trip on the bike and headed off to Lukang. There was a shoe sale at a 'very famous' shoe store, (though I'm realizing that there are many 'famous' foods, places, and shops in Taiwan because everytime we mention a great place we've been we're told it's famous in Taiwan! I digress).... we went to the shoe shop, didn't find any shoes and went out to the scooter only to realize that I (Michelle) had locked the keys under the seat. We called our friend Quintas who lives in Lukang and he hooked us up with a locksmith who broke into our scooter for $5 CDN. Not a bad price - we're so lucky that Quintas speaks Chinese and was able to help us out.
The whole procedure set us back about 2 hours time though, and after a visit with Quintas we had to head back to celebrate Thanksgiving. An American friend of ours was having a 'late' Thanksgiving dinner. So back home we went.
The dinner was great!
Sunday morning off we went again. Back to Lukang to finish our shopping. We had a great time, it's such a beautiful little town. Lukang is one of the oldest towns in Taiwan, it was a port when people used to travel here by boat from mainland China. It has a really long and rich history, many beautiful temples, lots of 'authentic' shops selling many traditional Taiwanese foods, lanterns, caligraphy, and almost every other 'Asian' artwork you could think of. We had fun walking down the winding narrow roads, sampling the local cuisine and enjoying each others' company.
#2 Jeff and Quintas (he's from South Africa and we often get together once a week just hanging out and chatting) wait while the locksmith gets to work on our scooter.
#3 A local vendor making a very popular snack . We don't know what it is exactly but we think its made out of a root. It gets fried and bakes up a little like a doughy pancake. Crusty on the outside and doughy in the inside) Is doughy even a word?! It's simple and delicious.
